How to Overcome the Vicious Cycle of Scarcity and Fear

Do you remember the toilet paper shortage of March 2020 due to the pandemic? Do remember worrying that maybe you’d have to resort to tissues or worse?

You could walk into the grocery store and buy all the broccoli and lettuce your heart desired, but you couldn’t find a single role of tp!

Why did this happen?

Scarcity!

The scarcity mindset took over in everyone’s minds. The idea that you didn’t have enough took over. Even if you didn’t hoard the tp, I bet you thought, “maybe I should pick up a pack or two”. We had this hyper-perception that we couldn’t get toilet paper any more.

Which led to fear. Which led to hoarding, fighting in Walmart, stealing from restaurants and gas stations.

You cannot make good decision when you are in scarcity. Scarcity leads to fear, which leads to more scarcity.

“There are never any solutions in panic. Progress is only made by bold decisions made by cool heads.” – LBJ

And when that brick, with the word Cancer written on it, flew through your window, I can guarantee that scarcity came to the forefront.

Overwhelming thoughts and emotions of not enough!

  • Not enough time to do what you wanted. Not enough time to make decisions about treatments.
  • Not enough health to deal with this huge life-changing diagnosis. Feelings of guilt of what caused the cancer.
  • Not enough support. Who’s going to take care of all the things in your life?
  • Not enough resources. Who’s going to take care of my kids? How am I going to do this financially?
  • Not enough trust. Who can I trust to give me the right options or are they out to get me?

And the big one – the scarcity of your life! Your life is never going to be the same.

This change doesn’t have to be a negative thing! Cancer can actually transform your life for the better by transforming your mindset, health and meaning in life.

But if you’re stuck in the “what if’s” and the “not enough’s”, the scarcity mindset will lead to fear. Fear for your life. Fear for the process. Which all cycles back to the “I don’t have enough!”

This mindset and stressful living leads to being reactionary. Often extreme reactions. These Reactive measures lead to more imbalance in your life, sadness, and loss of hope.

Scarcity caused by fear is dangerous.

If you panic… you’re in scarcity… you’re in fear… you lose. You lose who you are.

Here are two tips to counteract this scarcity mindset:

  1. Get clarity on why you’re fight so hard.
  2. Slow your mind down.

I know it’s hard to slow your minds down at 4am when your thought life seems to take over. Figure out how to slow down, figure out some techniques that will help you go from what-if’s to confidence in your healing process.

It teaches you how to get out of this mentality, along with how to feed your body and mind to make your body inhospitable to cancer.
